A red sandstone fortress on the banks of the Yamuna river, substantially rebuilt by Mughal emperor Akbar starting in 1565 on the site of an earlier fort, and later expanded by his successors Jahangir and Shah Jahan. It served as the primary residence of the Mughal emperors until 1638, when the capital shifted to Delhi. Shah Jahan himself was imprisoned here by his son Aurangzeb for the final eight years of his life, reportedly gazing at the Taj Mahal from Musamman Burj tower. The fort blends Akbar's austere red sandstone architecture with the white marble pavilions added later by Shah Jahan.
