India Gate, Delhi

CategoryArt, Heritage

Delhi's National Gallery of Modern Art, housed partly within the restored Jaipur House, a 1936 former royal residence, showcases India's modern and contemporary art from the mid-19th century onward. Its collection includes works by pioneering Bengal School artists, Amrita Sher-Gil and later modernists like M.F. Husain and Tyeb Mehta. An extension building added in 2009 significantly expanded its exhibition space, making it one of the largest art galleries in South Asia by collection size. It sits close to India Gate on Delhi's central cultural axis.

Did you know? The National Gallery of Modern Art is housed in the former residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur, built in 1936, making the building itself, not just its collection, a piece of pre-independence architectural history.
