Knesset Eliyahoo Synagogue

A Baroque-style synagogue built in 1884 by Jewish businessman Jacob Elias Sassoon in memory of his father, one of the few surviving Baghdadi Jewish synagogues in India. Its striking blue-and-white exterior and ornate stained glass, chandeliers and gilded columns reflect the wealth of Mumbai's once-thriving Jewish trading community. It remains an active place of worship despite the community's decline through 20th-century emigration. The synagogue is a protected heritage structure in the historic Kala Ghoda precinct.

Did you know? Knesset Eliyahoo Synagogue was built by the Sassoon family, Baghdadi Jewish merchants who became one of Bombay's most influential business dynasties, its striking blue exterior remains a rare surviving landmark of the city's once-thriving Jewish community.
