Sion Fort

Sion, Mumbai

Managed byMaharashtra State Archaeology & Museums Department
CategoryArt, Urban History

A 17th-century hilltop fort built to guard the northern approaches to Bombay Island, associated with Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's campaigns against Mughal and British forces in the region. Little remains beyond its outer walls and bastions today, overtaken in parts by residential development around Sion. The fort offers elevated views over the Sion-Mahim creek and the surrounding suburb. It is freely accessible and maintained as a small public heritage precinct.

Did you know? Sion Fort marked the historic boundary between British-controlled Bombay and neighbouring Portuguese-controlled Salsette island, its ruins still overlook the causeway that once connected the two territories.
