Freedom Park

Gandhi Nagar, Bengaluru

Managed byBruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP)
CategoryUrban History, Freedom & National History

A public park in central Bengaluru built on the site of the former Central Jail, which held freedom fighters during India's independence struggle and was demolished in 2008 to make way for the park. It preserves a section of the old jail wall and a watchtower as memorials to the freedom movement. Freedom Park has since become one of Bengaluru's designated spaces for public protest and demonstration, alongside its role as a green recreational space. It hosts music festivals, art installations and civic events throughout the year.

Did you know? Freedom Park was once the Old Central Jail of Bangalore, the same prison that held freedom fighters during the independence movement, before being converted into a public memorial space in 2008.
