A UNESCO World Heritage monument built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in 1648 as the seat of Mughal power in Delhi. Its red sandstone ramparts enclose palaces, halls and gardens that once housed the Peacock Throne. The fort hosts the Prime Minister's Independence Day address every August 15th. A museum inside chronicles the 1857 uprising and the Indian National Army trials held here.
Did you know? The Red Fort's Lahori Gate is where India's Prime Minister hoists the national flag and addresses the nation every Independence Day, a tradition begun by Jawaharlal Nehru on 15 August 1947.
