Mahim, Mumbai
A coastal fort ruin near Mahim that guarded the creek separating Mahim from Bandra. Accounts differ on who built it, the Portuguese in the 16th century by some sources and the British in the 17th by others, and it was later held by the British. Little of the original structure survives today, with only fragments of its walls remaining amid dense urban development. It once played a strategic role in controlling access between the seven islands that formed early Bombay. The site is now a modest, largely informal heritage spot rather than a maintained monument.
Worth visiting on the same trip.
